The California's Coastal Prairies website was developed as part of the Coastal Prairie Enhancement Feasibility Study, a project jointly funded by:
- California State Coastal Conservancy
- Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District
- UC Natural Reserve System
- UC Davis Office of Research
The Feasibility Study encompassed three general areas of coastal prairie conservation:
- Restoration - restoration activities conducted at five partner sites to control invasions of purple velvet grass (Holcus lanatus)
- Mapping - application of a new satellite-based mapping technique (developed at the UC Davis CSTARS lab) that uses seasonal imagery to map grassland types within 10 miles of the coast in Sonoma and Marin counties.
- Education - development of the California's Coastal Prairies website to act as an informational resource for environmental education organizations throughout Sonoma and Marin counties.
